The Square-Foot Price Is Only Useful When the Scope Matches
Backyard artificial turf cost depends on the construction required to turn the existing yard into a supported, drainable surface. Two Texas yards with the same measured area can have different prices because the demolition, access, base and finishing work are different.
A useful estimate explains what the installer is building beneath the grass and at the boundaries. A low headline rate can be misleading if it excludes disposal, drainage corrections or the edge detail required by the property. This guide explains how to read a residential quote rather than offering a statewide price that may not fit your yard.
Separate the Surface Area From the Purchased Material
Measured lawn area and turf ordered are not always equal. Rolls have fixed dimensions, while yards have curves, planting islands and narrow side passages. Cutting around those shapes creates offcuts. Fiber direction and seam placement also affect the layout.
Ask the contractor to distinguish the installed area from material allowances. A design that uses a few extra feet of turf may avoid an awkward seam through the main seating area. The goal is an efficient layout with a credible material quantity, not the smallest number on paper.
Identify the Existing Work That Must Be Removed
Sod, roots, old aggregate, landscape edging and abandoned irrigation create different demolition tasks. Removal depth and disposal access change labor and hauling. Existing turf replacement may also require taking out joining materials and correcting an older base.
A proposal should identify what remains, what is removed and how unexpected buried debris is handled. If the installer cannot establish a concealed condition in advance, ask for a clear allowance or change procedure rather than a silent assumption.
Compare Base and Drainage Scope Line by Line
The quote should describe subgrade preparation, aggregate materials, finished elevations and the intended water path. It should also identify whether drains are included, reused or excluded.
Do not compare a complete drainage correction with a proposal that assumes existing drainage works. Read residential artificial turf drainage to understand why the backing's permeability does not answer the whole drainage question.
Ask what happens if excavation reveals soft ground or unsuitable fill. The answer should identify who reviews the condition and how additional work is priced.
Small Yards Can Have Higher Unit Costs
A small courtyard still needs mobilization, deliveries, preparation, finishing and cleanup. Narrow gates or a long route from the street can limit equipment and increase hand work. That can raise the cost per installed square foot even when the total project is smaller.
Share gate widths, stairs and access photographs before relying on a preliminary budget. Our site access guide explains these differences in more detail.
Price the Edges and Adjacent Work
Transitions to patios, pool decks, fences, planting and pavers require deliberate details. Irrigation adjustments, tree openings and utility access may also belong in the scope. Clarify whether the contractor restores disturbed planting or paving outside the turf footprint.
Pet use, putting areas and decorative paver strips can change the assembly. A general lawn rate should not automatically be applied to every feature.
Use This Residential Quote Checklist
- Installed area and material allowance.
- Removal, excavation and disposal.
- Subgrade assumptions and base construction.
- Drainage scope and discharge assumptions.
- Turf product, infill and joining materials.
- Perimeter securement and transitions.
- Irrigation modifications and access protection.
- Cleanup, care instructions and warranty responsibilities.
Can I get an accurate quote from a photograph?
Photographs can support preliminary planning. Final scope may require measurements, access review and inspection of conditions that are not visible in an image.
Is a higher price proof of a better installation?
No. Compare the stated construction scope, materials and responsibilities. Price alone does not establish quality.
