Start With the Pool's Operating Space
Artificial turf around a pool should fit the way people enter the water, move furniture and maintain the equipment. It is part of a larger outdoor surface arrangement, not a replacement for every hardscape function.
Before choosing grass, map the pool deck, gates, drains, equipment, utility access and furniture. Identify where water collects today. The layout should solve those conditions while maintaining the access and clearances required by the pool project.
Define the Turf Boundary With the Pool Contractor
For new construction, coordinate turf work with the pool and hardscape teams. Finished elevations, deck edges and drainage details must agree. Identify who prepares each substrate and who protects completed work during later construction.
For an existing pool, review the condition of the deck and nearby ground. Turf should not cover an unresolved leak or conceal access needed for inspection. If wet ground is unexplained, investigate before pricing a surface replacement.
Distinguish Splash Water From Site Drainage
A lawn may receive splash water, cleaning water, rain and runoff from adjacent paving. Determine where each source travels. A permeable turf product does not guarantee that the supporting surface or discharge point can receive it.
Avoid directing landscape runoff toward the pool. The appropriate drainage arrangement should be coordinated with the responsible project professionals. See residential turf drainage for the full water path.
Make Transitions Deliberate
The turf-to-deck edge needs a stable, finished connection. Establish the desired height relationship, securement and access to nearby drains. Corners and curves should be detailed before cutting begins.
Review walking routes with the installed surface condition in mind. Do not infer slip resistance or suitability for a specific wet-use application from appearance alone; request relevant product information.
Account for Sun and Reflected Heat
Pool settings often combine direct sunlight with glass doors, windows or reflective surfaces. Inspect those relationships before installation. Products can become hot in sunny conditions, and concentrated reflections are a separate source of potential damage.
Ask for product-specific heat guidance and any operating precautions. A cooling claim does not mean the lawn stays comfortable under every exposure. Read window reflection and turf damage when glass faces the proposed turf area.
Confirm Chemical and Cleaning Compatibility
Discuss the expected pool environment with the turf supplier, including the pool type and any cleaning products used nearby. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for incidental exposure and surface cleaning.
Avoid treating resistance to one substance as proof of compatibility with all pool chemicals. Store concentrated chemicals away from the lawn and handle spills according to the relevant product instructions.
Keep Equipment and Covers Serviceable
Identify equipment-access routes, drain covers, valves and any anchors or mechanisms used by a pool cover. The turf installation should preserve those functions. Plan removable access details where appropriate rather than cutting the finished lawn during the next service visit.
Heavy furniture, planters and equipment can also influence layout. Use suitable supports or protection where the turf system requires them.
A Poolside Scope Should Answer These Questions
- Which surfaces remain and which are removed?
- Where does runoff discharge?
- How is the turf secured at the deck?
- Can drains and equipment still be serviced?
- What sun and glass exposures exist?
- What cleaning and furniture-use guidance applies?
- Who restores surfaces disturbed by other trades?
Can artificial grass replace the whole pool deck?
That should not be assumed. The pool design, applicable requirements, access and surface functions determine the appropriate materials.
Is turf around a pool maintenance-free?
No. Debris, splash residues, infill and edges still require appropriate care.
